BB2C Programs: Job Shadowing-Washington County Sheriff's Office

On May 17th the Washington County Sheriff’s Office hosted 8 students from the Mid-Ohio Valley for a law enforcement panel. Due to restrictions with the Sheriff’s office, traditional job shadowing is restricted. So, how do we partner with them to get students in contact with officers to gain information and build a future law enforcement workforce? We get a little creative. BB2C contacted Captain Rhodes last semester to see how we could partner and connect students interested in law enforcement careers. In talking with the Captain, he recognized the importance of connecting students to officers in the field as it is becoming more and more difficult to recruit for their workforce. Captain Brian Rhodes came up with a solution of facilitating a law enforcement panel to talk with interested students and answer questions.

Several different law enforcement agencies came together to let the students know about the different responsibilities that each agency is responsible to handle on a daily basis. Deputy Jason Hall , pictured with Largo, graciously came as well to talk about the K-9 unit. This was the second time we have done this panel and the students have reacted extremely positive to the job shadowing placement. They feel it is definitely a worthwhile placement and feel that other students should have the opportunity as well.

A senior from Marietta High School attended the panel this semester as well as last semester and already has plans to apply for a correctional officer position, which is an entry level position in this field. Students learned about the different pathways into a law enforcement career and the officers all spoke with a great passion for their field.

Thank you so much, Captain Rhodes, for recruiting all the agencies in attendance and for your desire to help our students!
