This owner would like all of the south-facing windows on the house to be shaded in the summer, but exposed to the sunlight in the winter. Based on your location and calculated sun angles, what options does the home owner have to achieve this goal? Will the roof overhang need to be deeper? Are there other methods of shading other than extending the edges of the roof?

The Colony Theatre: Renovations that will lead to the eventual re-opening of the facility. The Colony Theatre just received $50,000 in grant funding. Pickering has been contracted to complete a number of jobs as funding becomes available.  The list is extensive however the need to prioritize as funding is crucial to the project’s success.  Currently we have three pressing issues that need addressed:  heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) needs updated, Handicap accessibility, and multi-media system (sound, lighting, and acoustics).   Based on what the engineers’ billing rate per hour is you need to decide which discipline (mechanical, architectural, or electrical) project will be most viable with funding available.  Consideration should be given for which project contributes most effectively to future use.

Problem Description

You have recently moved to a new area in Southeastern Ohio. As a new community member, you were encouraged to attend a meeting at the Local Environmental Governing Board when a colleague learned of your interest in improving the interactions between Humans and the Environment in order to improve life quality for the community members. At the meeting, you become aware of increasing issues due to rainfall and flooding. Many of the issues include erosion of the land near the rivers, deterioration of local landmarks, and house and property damage for the residents. Using what you have learned about GIS Systems and how water positively and negatively interacts with the humans around it, develop on action plan of steps to address this issue for your new community.

Pickering is currently engaged with a Texas based Oil and Gas Company looking to construct wells in the Washington County Area.  Pickering is assigned to choose the site and design the well pad. The oil and gas company is on an accelerated schedule and wants the well to start producing within 6 months of construction.  The first problem is site selection.  Pickering has three sites to consider:  Northeastern Washington County, Central Washington County, and Southeastern Washington County.  The oil and gas company wants assurance they will have the site that will yield the most the fastest because competitors are quickly moving into the area.
